Ricoh Sakura Vintage Automatic — The Cobalt Blue Dial that Captivates at First Glance
In the 1970s, Japanese watchmaking produced pieces of extraordinary character: watches that made no apologies for their boldness, loudly declaring their era with shapes and colors impossible to ignore. The Ricoh Sakura is one such watch. The massive brushed stainless steel square case, with its strong geometric lines and crisp edges, is a manifesto of the "machine age" aesthetic that dominated Japanese industrial design of the time.
But it's the electric cobalt blue dial that steals the show: a deep, vibrant blue, ranging from an almost dark intensity at the center to a luminous energy towards the edges, with its applied rectangular polished steel hour markers that almost seem to float on the surface. In the upper left, the signature "RICOH / AUTOMATIC / 21 JEWELS" proudly stands, flanked by the red sakura logo — the stylized cherry blossom, a symbol of the line's identity — and at the bottom, the inscription "JAPAN MADE" reiterates the origin of a product built to last decades. And this Ricoh has traversed all those decades.
